Thérèse

Director:  Alain Cavalier
Year Released:  1986
Rating:  1.0

This abbreviated look at the life of Saint Thérèse shows her as being delusional and sexually repressed which I'm certain is not the most common image people have of her. Claiming this is on par with Dreyer's religious masterpieces like The Passion of Joan of Arc or Ordet is infuriating nonsense; Cavalier can't draw up enough emotion and energy to make it anything more than a grayish, monotonous play (and one with an overused fade-out/fade-in device). When it could have gotten into what she did to make herself so revered it instead chooses to show lust in the convent, and one particular woman who tastes the fluid Thérèse has been hacking up.
