Jubilee

Director: Derek Jarman
Year Released: 1977
Rating: 3.0

Jarman makes an anti-punk movie (with punk stars) for punks; it simultaneously captures that particular era of England and, at the same time, completely subverts it. It's at its worst whenever Jarman turns to outright political commentary, and then it becomes Nick Zedd filming Godard (dear me!) - it's at its best when ex-painter Jarman runs around with his camera, whimsically filming whatever comes to mind (like the bingo caller who tends to his garden made of plastic gnomes and fake foliage). Owes a great deal to the American avant-garde and Anger's fetishistic oeuvre; this is the only kind of Rocky Horror Picture Show I can appreciate.
