A Soldier's Story

Director: Norman Jewison
Year Released: 1984
Rating: 1.0

Jewison transforms himself into Stanley Kramer one again, but this time the effort is half-hearted and the film is a failure. An African-American officer (who everyone gawks at with unhinged jaws just like in the cartoons) investigates the murder of an elitist sergeant and gets met with opposition from some bigoted white soldiers, who use the "N" word to stir up the audience (because nothing else the movie does works anyway). Denzel Washington is good in an early role, but I didn't believe in the Sergeant character one bit.
