Theater Camp

Director: Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.5

Joan Rubinsky (Amy Sedaris), founder (and den mother) of a summer theatre camp for children, slips into a coma so her "influencer" son Troy (Jimmy Tatro) tries keeping the place going despite not being able to pay the bills (financial institution Barnswell Capital wants to buy them out) while devoted instructors Amos (Ben Platt) and Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon) struggle to put on a new musical (that goes over the details of Joan's life).  It was supposedly filmed in less than three weeks with most of the dialogue improvised and it's clearly influenced by Christopher Guest's mockumentaries, but the tone is smug and self-important (Troy's "broness" is considered "strange" by the flamboyant campers) and it might have been better off as a sitcom or limited series.  The message about doing everything to avoid a corporate takeover is nice, if a little trite by now.  For Platt and Gordon, who grew up together, this is a "world" they know all too well (and it shows) ... but journalists and interviewers should use caution and not bring up the term "industry baby" around either of them.
