Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000

Director: Alain Tanner
Year Released: 1976
Rating: 2.5

Post-May 68 disillusionment, where everything's "worse than before" in Switzerland: laid off typesetter Mathieu (Rufus) gets a job working on a farm, history teacher Marco (Jacques Denis) runs an unorthodox classroom, frustrated Max (Jean-Luc Bideau) has a gun, cashier Marie (Miou-Miou) is busy giving away the store, and so on.  It's quirky and has a decent sense of humor about it (the black and white sections suggest the characters' inner fantasy worlds), but there's some irksome intellectual posturing going on (money and excrement?) and it can't focus on anything for too long of a period of time and constantly (and frustratingly) jumps from one scene to another.  There is a little hope (maybe?) for future generations to fix things, but speaking as someone born just two years after this was released ... we haven't done much good.  The vital point?  Don't be a bootlicker.
