Drag queens Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) win a competition in their native New York City and are invited to travel to Hollywood to take part in a larger pageant, so they grab novice performer Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo), buy a convertible Cadillac DeVille and hit the road, but eventually have a problem with a homophobic Sheriff (Chris Penn) and then have their car break down in the backwards town of Snydersville.  In retrospect, this is unbelievably progressive for a mid-90's feature release, where the trio manage to (a.) put a stop to domestic violence (b.) "convert" a bunch of bigots (c.) make a mute woman speak and (d.) get a straight couple to fall in love: it's a Ballroom Scene Fever Dream.  But what's a little troublesome is the fact that the three main actors are heterosexuals and watching them mince around and fix their makeup could be seen as insulting (or appropriation) ... though that's not my place to judge.
