Hypnotic

Director: Robert Rodriguez
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.0

Detective Danny Rourke (Ben Affleck) has his little girl Minnie (Hala Finley) abducted by an 18-year-old with mental issues and he's convinced someone named "Dellrayne" (William Fichtner) has her, so he partners up with Diana Cruz (Alice Braga), who is a "hypnotic" and has the ability to alter peoples' thoughts and actions to locate her.  It's an exceptionally mediocre premise in which its central mechanism is poorly explained and the whole thing is embarrassingly derivative: part of it feels like a bad Dario Argento movie ... and then the third act is nothing more than a bunk variation of Christopher Nolan's Inception.  Ben adds some star power to it, but Rodriguez - who directed, co-wrote it, co-shot it and edited it - has done considerably better work in the past, specifically when he was using VCRs to cobble his projects together.
