Decision at Sundown

Director: Budd Boetticher
Year Released: 1957
Rating: 2.0

Ol' chums Bart (Randolph Scott) and Sam (Noah Beery, Jr.) ride into the town of Sundown with bad intentions: they're after Tate Kimbrough (John Carroll), who Bart believes drove his late wife Mary to suicide ... except it's Tate's wedding day, and he plans on marrying Lucy (Karen Steele).  From the very beginning of the movie it doesn't seem like our anti-heroes are going about this the right way and their decision-making is puzzling: instead of just cornering and shooting Tate and leaving they make a big production out of it in the church, then wind up hiding out in the livery stable and have almost every man in the nearby area wanting to kill them.  The ending is unorthodox (and a little depressing): Tate survives, Sam's dead and Bart departs even more broken than when he showed up.
