Scream VI

Director: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.5

Half-sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) find themselves - along with their fellow survivors of the Woodsboro attack the year prior - in the Big Apple where, as expected, "someone" is running around with the Ghostface mask stabbin' away, so investigative reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) shows up to cover the story ... and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), who works for the Feds, also makes an appearance.  As the "sequel" to the "requel" it once again takes the opportunity to completely halt the movie to explain what's happening (Zoomers love to lecture) and point out how both legacy and "new" characters" are vulnerable ... before going on its mindless - although refreshingly mean-spirited - hack-and-slash spree, culminating in an idiotic conclusion.  As the longest of all the movies in the Scream franchise, it meanders a bit, but there are two sections worth noting: the opening with associate film professor Laura (Samara Weaving) waiting for her "date" is a good way to start, and the subway sequence - with commuters wearing a variety of famous horror villain costumes - is well done.  More of that, lads....
