To Leslie

Director: Michael Morris
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 2.0

Having blown all her winnings from the local lottery (tallying 190k) on drugs and alcohol and currently destitute, Leslie (Andrea Riseborough) goes to live with her son James (Owen Teague) but misbehaves and he throws her out, she then stays with old "friends" Nancy (Allison Janney) and Dutch (Stephen Root) and they can't stand her ... and then she's "saved" by lonely hotel manager Sweeney (Marc Maron).  It's a very 'showy' performance for Riseborough (who deservedly was nominated for Best Actress by the Academy) - she even nails the accent (from what I can tell) - but it's also a bit tedious to watch a mentally disturbed woman misbehave for most of the running time (not one person tried to make her go to rehab) until eventually the 'crazy switch' gets (improbably) turned off and she cleans up her act.  For English director Morris - who normally works in television (on such shows as Shameless and Better Call Saul) - it's his feature film debut, and he somehow makes Los Angeles feel a little like rural Texas ... but for the record it's pasta e fagioli, not pasta fazool. Capisce?
