Encino Man

Director: Les Mayfield
Year Released: 1992
Rating: 2.0

Unpopular teenager Dave (Sean Astin) is digging a hole in his backyard with the intent to install a pool and throw a huge party only to find a massive chunk of ice with an actual caveman (Brendan Fraser) inside, so he and his dopey pal Stoney (Pauly Shore) thaw him out, give him a name ("Link"), bring him to school with them and tell everyone he's from Estonia.  If that plot recap makes it sound completely stupid and unbelievably juvenile that would be an accurate description - and Shore's off-brand Jeff Spicoli imitation might be hard to tolerate for some - but I must admit I kind of appreciate the characters' vivacity: it genuinely seems like the actors and actresses were having a lot of fun while making it (it also doesn't hurt that it did decently at the box office).  The insinuation that women "prefer" more "primitive" men and their "aggressive tendencies" may have been fine in the early 1990's, but is inconceivable in 2023, bud-dy.
