Sick of Myself

Director: Kristoffer Borgli
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 3.0

Toxic couple Thomas (Eirik Sæther) and Signe (Kristine Kujath Thorp) cannot stop trying to "one-up" each other for attention: he's an "artist" who steals furniture for his exhibitions (Duchamp would have loved them) while she first fakes a nut allergy and then abuses Russian anti-anxiety medication Lidexol which causes her to develop disfiguring skin lesions ... and then gains fame claiming she's a "victim."  Considering how "soft" and "eager-to-please" a lot of current cinema has become, this offers pretty sharp commentary on the obsession with self-absorption and "inclusion" (and all its hypocrisy): Signe is a pathological liar and a narcissist (she fantasizes about the hundreds of individuals who will mourn for her when she dies), but she's also a human being ... and people like that really do exist.  It's a solid second feature for director Borgli: it could have used some of its edges smoothed out - and maybe its sense of righteous indignation toned down - but he's willing to go where most will not.
