Italian migrant laborer Antonio Canova (Charles Blavette) goes to Southern France for work and is in a relationship with his landlord Marie (Jenny Hélia) but openly desires Josefa (Celia Montalván), who's with Albert (Max Dalban) - there's eventually a double wedding, but good times are brief and Antonio's fixation on Josefa is all-consuming.  Renoir's nonjudgmental attitude towards his characters (even when they're misbehaving ... because the men in this are kind of rough) and love of nature is evident in every rustic scene - he's bringing attention to the "working classes" who have hard lives (this supposedly influenced the neorealism movement in Italy) and providing a simple reminder about what bad things might happen if you covet another man's wife.  Not to get Biblical on you or anything....
