Decision to Leave

Director: Park Chan-Wook
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.5

Detective Hae-Jun (Park Hae-Il) - with some assistance from his deputy Soo-Wan (Go Kyung-Pyo) - investigate the suspicious death of 60-year-old Do-Soo (Yoo Seung-Mok), who may have "fallen off" a hill, leaving behind his much younger Chinese-born wife Seo-Rae (Tang Wei) who immediately becomes the prime suspect ... but Hae-Jun, while keeping a watch over where she spends her time (she's a nurse for the elderly), falls in love with her.  For the entire duration of the movie I couldn't quite figure out what this woman's allure actually was - the more everyone learns about her the more repellent (the Grandmother, the "stock analyst" lover) she appears to be - and the protagonist inexplicably gets more smitten by her antics; the sub-plots with all the other cases he's supposed to be working on get pushed far to the background and aren't explored that closely.  Fans of downbeat endings might want to queue this one up: I can't recall watching a tidier suicide in a feature film (and she did say she prefers the sea to the mountains).
