Here's a tagline they could have used: 100% Historically Inaccurate (and Proud)! Ditzy rethink of the origin of Shakespeare's plays (and sonnets) actually suggests that none other than the Earl of Oxford (Rhys Ifans) was the actual author and that he had an illegitimate child with Queen Elizabeth, while poor whoremaster Willie S. (Rafe Spall) was simply a front. Emmerich, best known for his gaudy American blockbusters (like 2012 and Independence Day) has now made a gaudy historical epic that contains sweeping cameras, rife overacting and cruddy dialogue and challenges documented facts at every turn - the fact that Oxford/Shakespeare's works can incite a riot among the groundlings is hilariously implausible. My father, a Shakespeare aficionado, couldn't watch it, so as far as trolling goes, Emmerich succeeds from that angle....
