Actor's Revenge, An

Director:  Kon Ichikawa
Year Released:  1963
Rating:  2.0

Fluctuates between compelling and outright dull; I had a hard time keeping focused on the matters at hand (mentally, I would drift from the picture to menial, non-film matters). Itís meticulously shot Ė Iíll grant it that Ė with tinted color schemes and a fabulous use of intense shadows, but thereís little to no detail as to why the actor wants revenge so badly (we have to simply accept those pained expressions on his face as evidence), and entirely too many contrivances to make anything seem plausible. Another Ichikawa film, The Burmese Harp, was an exceptional cinematic achievement; this feels like the work of a completely different filmmaker.
