Je, tu, il, elle

Director:  Chantal Akerman
Year Released:  1976
Rating:  2.0

A personal film by the Belgian auteur is in three sections: the first has "I" (Akerman herself) in her apartment, brooding over a breakup (and indulging in sugar), the second is with "He," a truck driver who picks up the Akerman character and gives an account of his lackluster marriage and the last section is Akerman and a former lover ("She") reuniting (and having sex). It's obviously a work of personal therapy for the director, but that is also its limitation: in '78 she would make the colorful, pensive Les Rendez-vous d'Anna - essentially a more developed version of this film - about a filmmaker traveling and absorbing the stories of others in the search for "home." Aside from the erotic affair that concludes this effort, it's basically a lot of brooding.
