Querelle

Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Year Released: 1982
Rating: 1.0

Sailor Brad Davis sets out to explore his homosexuality in this terminally mundane adaptation of the Jean Genet work; funny how none of the Genet adaptations or screenplays (including Mademoiselle) comes close to the simplistic beauty of his very own Un chant de amour. The only component to this that I found to truly excel is the set design, which features phallic columns and orange backdrops - it helps to create a mood of decadence. Too bad the dialogue (in English) is horrible (as well as the loathsome voice-over) and its filmmaker was at the very end of his life on Earth.
