The Seventh Continent

Director: Michael Haneke
Year Released: 1989
Rating: 1.0

A husband, wife and daughter commit suicide in their home after ravaging their house and flushing their money down the toilet apparently out of disgust for modern living. It is certainly true that it's based on a true story, but Haneke admits to editing out the details (money trouble, sexual trouble) as an 'easy' explanation for the self-destruction - he prefers to repeat footage of them eating breakfast, tying their shoes and going through the minutiae of daily living and making this into a story of alienation. Some people are fans of his 'methods' but I find him to be purposely evasive and precious and his worldview - in this particular case - to be nihilistic and troubling.
