Tokyo Godfathers

Director: Satoshi Kon
Year Released: 2003
Rating: 1.5

Animated remake of the John Ford film 3 Godfathers about a trio of bums (each with his/her own histories) who discover an abandoned baby and set out to find its proper mother. Starts off with comic promise, but ends up as humorous as Three Men and a Baby, using the transvestite character for cheap laughs and struggling to remain plausible when so many hard-to-accept plot contrivances direct the picture towards a very calculated ending. It has neither the zip nor the charisma of the Ford picture - which, though better than this, is still flawed in its own right.
