The Gypsy and the Gentleman

Director: Joseph Losey
Year Released: 1958
Rating: 1.5

A wealthy gentleman falls for a buxom wanderer played by Melina Mercouri - her overly sexual presence has a way of disgusting all around her so in response she gnashes her teeth at them and spits in their face. Naturally, Mercouri's lack of culture - in a house of culture and refinement - only brings chaos, and her whole purpose in being there is to seduce the man and swindle him out of money. A young woman is locked up to prevent her from marrying a doctor, housemaids are slapped, there's a knife fight and two people drown themselves: despite all this, it's just another forgettable soap opera. The moral? Never marry a gypsy.
