Bruce Almighty

Director: Tom Shadyac
Year Released: 2003
Rating: 0.5

Disgustingly self-centered movie in which God (Morgan Freeman) outright ignores those with cancer and other incurable diseases and actually gives Jim Carrey - needing a box office hit after dramatic flubs - the ability to alter the world. So ignorant in its approach and execution - the Supreme Being finds jingles amusing and can't spell; victims of riots and ecological disasters are just statistics and therefore irrelevant - and consistently awkward (the scene where Steve Carell starts uttering random noises during his first day as an anchor - because of Carrey's 'divine intervention' - is cruel and cringe-inducing) that calling it sacrilegious is giving it too much credit: it's just not smart enough to be offensive. It only works briefly as comedy, too, with Carrey's jerky gestations being good for a few smiles.
