She's Having a Baby (1988) review

Newlyweds Jake (Kevin Bacon) and Kristy (Elizabeth McGovern) are having a rough time adjusting to married life: they don't have much money, Jake has a B.A. in "romance languages" and finds it difficult to get a decent paying job, Kristy's parents are critical of him, Jake's hedonistic friend Davis (Alec Baldwin) is a bad influence ... and then Kristy decides she wants to have a child.  As a personal movie from Hughes (who dedicated it to his wife) it has a solid core premise that isn't explored in many movies - specifically, the challenges of young adults who "tie the knot" when still financially unsettled and a bit immature - except the execution is abysmal: the "comedic vignettes" (dancing with lawnmowers?) are unamusing, the two leads don't seem like they even enjoy each other's presence and the last sequence (with Kristy in the hospital because her baby is breach) is a lame cry for sympathy.  As we know by now, having a kid will "always" save a marriage ... and they should have named him Gandolf.
