Simone Barbès or Virtue

Director: Marie-Claude Treilhou
Year Released: 1980
Rating: 2.5

Simone (Ingrid Bourgoin) and Martine (Martine Simonet) both work at a very busy porn theatre and have to deal with a variety of creeps, including an irate "director" (as well as a few polite fellows) - eventually, Simone leaves to spend some time in a lesbian bar and finally drives home an older gentleman through the mostly vacant streets of Paris.  There is no actual "plot" to speak of, the acting is a bit affected and it isn't much of a character study (Simone remains a mysterious figure throughout), but this rather brief feature is really about atmosphere and nocturnal vibes, and it was lovingly recorded by the superb cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier (who would later go on to be the DP for Agnès Varda, Leos Carax, Gus Van Sant, Harmony Korine and many more filmmakers before passing away at the too-young age of 52).  As a dream-like experiment, you might end up remembering bits and pieces long after you're done watching it, such as a sword fight, a spunky lady performing a punk song and a man being shot for no reason whatsoever.
