Splitsville

Director: Michael Angelo Covino
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 1.0

Podcaster and "life coach" Ashley (Adria Arjona) informs her gym teacher husband Carey (Kyle Marvin) that she wants a divorce (and admits to cheating on him), so he goes and stays with his best friend Paul (Covino) and Julie (Dakota Johnson) who are in an "open relationship" ... yet when Carey sleeps with Julie and tells Paul about it, they have a huge fight.  The "sex farce" genre has been around for a very long time, but mocking "polyamorous" couples in this manner is cheap - what's next, a movie making fun of genderqueer women and their pronouns? - and it's completely missing any sense of proper comedic timing (so imagine a Saturday Night Live skit stretched out to one-hundred minutes).  There's a vague attempt to comment on "masculinity" - Carey's "manhood" is on full display multiple times, Paul's son has his pants and underwear dropped at school - although I'm not sure what it's trying to say there, and the characters are mostly contemptible: it offers an "optimistic conclusion" even though whatever "harmony" they think they've found will not last.
