Ick
Director: Joseph Kahn
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
High school quarterback Hank Wallace (Brandon Routh) had all the potential to go play in college (and maybe even get drafted by an NFL team) but an injury (and drinking problems) dashed his hopes, so he becomes a science teacher in his small town of Eastbrook ... except an invasive plant/parasite called the "ick" starts to spread everywhere, so he and his student Grace (Malina Weissman), the daughter of his ex-girlfriend Staci (Mena Suvari), have to fight it off. As a metaphor for COVID - and certain individuals' crazy reactions to that pandemic - it lacks any subtlety whatsoever and as a derivative horror movie with some attempts at humor, Kahn doesn't have the skill of Sam Raimi and Routh isn't Bruce Campbell. The rapid cutting (a Kahn trademark) does keep things moving rapidly, although it doesn't move fast enough to distract from the icky and possibly incestuous sexual tension between Mr. Wallace and Grace.
