Prince of Broadway
Director: Sean Baker
Year Released: 2008
Rating: 2.0
New York-based street peddler Lucky (Prince Adu) works for Armenian Levon (Karren Karagulian) pushing counterfeit luxury goods but is chased down by his ex-girlfriend Linda (Kat Sanchez) who hands him a small child (with the hairline of a 60-year-old), tells him it's his and he needs to take care of it ... and the kid completely interferes with his usual day-to-day "activities" as well as his relationship with current partner Karina (Keyali Mayaga). As Baker's third feature film, it reveals a genuine interest in a group of hustlers just trying to make a few bucks luring in tourists with knock-offs and in constant fear of the police - who do eventually appear - although the improvisation does go overboard (there are too many scenes of Lucky having an emotional fit) and using a toddler for sympathy points is way too easy (the tike is a bit of a handful, however, especially when he's smearing doo-doo on the wall). As expected, Levon's arrested (after losing his wife) and that means Lucky's going to be out of work temporarily, but they're both so resilient you know they'll figure something out: there's always another sucker around the corner.
