Back in Action
Director: Seth Gordon
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 1.5
Fifteen years after their last mission, which had them nearly blown up in an airplane, "retired" spies Matt (Jamie Foxx) and his wife Emily (Cameron Diaz) are living in the suburbs with their two children, defiant Alice (McKenna Roberts) and techie Leo (Rylan Jackson), when former coworker Chuck (Kyle Chandler) appears at their front door looking for a mysterious device called the ICS Key he believes they have - they escape to London, meet with Emily's mother Ginny (Glenn Close) but are followed by Emily's ex-boyfriend (and MI6 agent) Baron (Andrew Scott). Following an eleven year hiatus, Diaz finally reappears on the big screen, except the script for this January release (which was also plagued by Foxx's health problems) is, for the most part, a slapped together first draft that crumbles to bits upon even the slightest inspection: for being affiliates of the Agency, the lead characters aren't too bright, but they sure can fight. The one thing it does do well with is the casting: veterans Foxx and Diaz work well with each other, and some of their banter is mildly amusing. By the way, who thinks smoking weed can actually cause diarrhea? Is that what Snoop told Cameron back in their old high school days?
