His Three Daughters
Director: Azazel Jacobs
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.5
With their father Vinny (Jay O. Sanders) dying from cancer in his apartment and continuously being visited by health care workers, his offspring Katie (Carrie Coon), Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) sit around and refuse to get along: Katie's constantly irritated with irresponsible stoner Rachel while "recovering Deadhead" Christina, who regularly does yoga, plays peacemaker. This comes across like a poorly developed stage play (there are too many redundant scenes and the characters' moping is irritating) that uses a mostly unseen patriarch as a plot device (for the majority of the movie you can only hear the beeping of the machines keeping him alive) which "springs to life" all-too-briefly during a fantasy scene where Vinny stands up, has a beer and offers some advice. Its real "accomplishment" is making three of the most likeable and bubbly actresses on Planet Earth insufferable to spend any amount of time with ... which is an impressive feat. Trying to make a Bergman-esque movie ain't a cakewalk, is it?
