The Beanie Bubble

Director: Kristin Gore and Damian Kulash
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.0

Partially-true story about how three ladies - auto mechanic Robbie (Elizabeth Banks), lighting designer Sheila (Sarah Snook) and med student Maya (Geraldine Viswanathan) - worked for emotionally stunted Beanie Baby manufacturer Ty Warner (a beardless Zach Galifianakis) and provided good ideas for him (taking advantage of the newly-developing World Wide Web, expanding into foreign markets, writing poems for the toys, etc.) before he inevitably betrayed all of them.  The subject itself is cute (I'll admit I still have a few in the house) but it doesn't exactly make for "compelling cinema" - it's another feeble "feminist" biopic - and, for some inexplicable reason, constantly flips around time frames, which makes it a confusing viewing.  You know it doesn't cut deep enough when the real Mr. Warner issued a statement praising it, saying, "... like the filmmakers, I am in the business of dreams, and I admire their creative spirit."  If you want a hearty chuckle (and are a font enthusiast) use the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine and take a peek what their site looked like in the late 1990's....
