You Hurt My Feelings

Director: Nicole Holofcener
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.5

Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), an author and creative writing instructor at The New School, overhears her therapist husband Don (Tobias Menzies) tell his brother-in-law Mark (Arian Moayed) he really doesn't like her latest novel and it makes her very upset.  I suppose the whole question of "how do you know if someone's being genuine with you" is valid (if pointless) - as long as the other person is "trying" to be supportive (despite internal reservations) that's basically all that matters - but any philosophical points it's attempting to make are washed away by the smugness, where the characters are mentally trapped in the NYC Bubble and have no desire to leave.  Holofcener shows Beth and her sister Sarah (Michaela Watkins) volunteering to give out clothing items to the less fortunate - to show how "charitable" they are - but even then they're both sort of passive-aggressive about it.  And for the record: there is nothing wrong with a cashmere V-neck sweater.
