Play Misty for Me

Director: Clint Eastwood
Year Released: 1971
Rating: 2.0

Radio DJ Dave Garver (Eastwood) makes a terrible mistake by having a one-night stand with long-time listener (and superfan) Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter), then goes about trying to rekindle a relationship with Tobie (Donna Mills) ... but Evelyn is clearly psychotic, stalks him, makes a duplicate house key, cuts her wrists in the bathroom, slashes his cleaning lady, etc.  As far as directorial debuts go, this could have been worse - Clint (who was 40 years old) paid attention when working with other filmmakers (Don Siegel appears as a bartender) and he gets to indulge in his love of music (there's some thrown in footage of the Monterey Jazz Festival with Cannonball Adderley), but the main issue is with the script, which is terribly underwritten and mostly consists of Walter lashing out like a freak while Clint remains taciturn and stoic.  I'm not sure what psychiatric facility would just "free" someone after attempted murder, but the state of California really does things their own way....
