Knock at the Cabin

Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 2.0

Four individuals, led by elementary school teacher Leonard (Dave Bautista), approach a cabin occupied by Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew (Ben Aldridge) - who are with their seven-year-old adopted daughter Wen (Kristen Cui) - and give them an ultimatum (based on "visions" they've had): one of the three of them must be sacrificed in order to "prevent the Apocalypse."  Granted the viewer can 'get past' the flimsy premise - the invaders are either (a.) insane or (b.) actually correct, with no middle ground - and the crudely inserted flashbacks (which show the early years of Eric and Andrew's relationship), Shyamalan does at least have complete conviction in his presentation, and the movie is sharply directed.  I'm not sure what to make of the 'moral' (if there is any): is the world a better place without some people in it?  Should we take coincidences seriously?  Were the January 6th insurrectionists following a message from the cosmos?
