Wendell & Wild

Director: Henry Selick
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 2.0

When she was just a child, Kat (voiced by Serelle Strickland) survived a car accident in which her parents drowned, so as a rebellious teen (Lyric Ross) in an all-girls private school, she's determined to bring them back to life, so she gets some "help" from mischievous demons Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Jordan Peele) ... who have their own agenda.  The stop-motion effects by Selick and his team are really impressive, as are the set and character designs (Gabby Goat is adorable), but for a movie made for Gen Z (it even includes a trans boy who helps Kat out) there is way too much going on plot-wise and it's highly disorganized - there's also a side story involving an evil company called Klax Korp that's run by a black Emperor #45 (which, in reality, would be his worst nightmare).  The message about the need for prison reform is important ... but this seems like an odd place to put it with little context.  For the record, in my decades of teaching I've never once met anyone who listened to or heard of the bands X-Ray Spex and Fishbone ... but if this gets the kiddos hooked on TV on the Radio, I'm all about it.
