Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

Director: Eric Appel
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 2.5

"Unconventional" (ahem) biopic about the life of comedian-musician Alfred Matthew Yankovic (Daniel Radcliffe) as he runs away from his unsupportive parents (Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss), writes a song parody of "My Sharona" by the Knack, becomes best friends with radio personality Dr. Demento (Rainn Wilson), accidentally tries LSD and starts dating pop superstar Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) ... who gets kidnapped by Columbian coke king Pablo Escobar (Arturo Castro).  It's really a two-joke movie, but fans of the polka master should enjoy both of them: first, I doubt he's ever lost sleep over not making original music (the majority of his career is built on mocking other people's songs ... with great success for both him and them ... but not Prince) and second, the real Yankovic doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs and had a (relatively) normal upbringing, so he's the exact opposite of Jim Morrison.  I'm actually surprised at how well Radcliffe works in the lead, as he unflinchingly commits to the silliness: when he has to turn into Rambo to rescue Ms. Ciccone, it's a nice little reminder of a similar sequence in 1989's UHF (which has deservedly turned into a cult classic).  Is it a novelty?  Yes.  Is it exactly what you've come to expected from him?  Also yes.
