Running With the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee

Director: Charlie Russell
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 2.5

Documentarian Russell talks to reporter Rocco Castoro and cameraman Robert King about when they were sent by Vice magazine to travel with exceptionally bright but tweaked businessman/programmer John McAfee (founder of the security software corporation bearing his name) in Belize where he was accused of murdering his neighbor, had to flee to Guatemala and was followed around by the Federales, "pretended" to have a heart attack, came back to the States, went on with his drug-fueled world tour and allegedly committed suicide in Spain in 2021.  I've always found McAfee to be such an fascinating character who actually had a lot of thought-provoking things to say regarding politics (he was a member of the Libertarian Party) and emerging technology (he loved cryptocurrencies) but this wants to play up the Hunter S. Thompson-esque side of his personality (bath salts, Johnny Walker and vodka regularly go "down the hatch") ... although, in its defense, John fully embraced his "rogue" status.  Two of the "big reveals" strain credibility: the first, that he murdered his father and disguised it as a suicide is possible but a stretch (you never know) but the second, that he faked his own death (a theory promoted by ex-girlfriend Sam Herrera) and is still alive is frankly impossible.  America loves its outlaws, and here was one with a brain full of coke and code.  Rest easy, you crazy diamond.
