Do Revenge

Director: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.0

At the Rosehill Country Day High School (which is more of an upscale resort than a place where people ... read books and learn), students Drea (Camila Mendes) and newcomer Eleanor (Maya Hawke) agree to enact "revenge" on each other's enemies: Eleanor needs to target Drea's ex-boyfriend Max (Austin Abrams) who she believes "leaked" a sex tape she made, while Drea is tasked with going after Carissa (Ava Capri) who spread malicious rumors about Eleanor ... and then it gets really messy.  The supposed "inspiration" was a certain 1951 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock (who would have had to down a bottle of brandy to get through this), but tonally it's an off-shoot of Clueless (with traces of Mean Girls) ... only with the charm, wit, intelligence (what kind of idiot grows drugs on campus grounds?) and likeable characters replaced with a heaping amount of virtue signaling and currently trendy "buzzwords" (that change every few minutes).  There is a moment of clarity - however brief - among the abundant snippiness: while smoking a joint outside, Max mentions how exhausted he is with being popular, frets that life has become too "performative" (which is true) and just wants to travel abroad and take photographs ... and then he goes back to trying to be Warren Beatty (with earrings).
