The Wedding Guest

Director: Michael Winterbottom
Year Released: 2018
Rating: 1.5

An unnamed man (Dev Patel) flies from England to Pakistan, buys pistols, shoots a security guard and kidnaps bride-to-be Samira (Radhika Apte) for her lover Deepesh (Jim Sarbh), but it turns out he really doesn't want her due to international media coverage of the incident.  It's listed as a "thriller," but it's anything but: at no point did I ever get a feeling the two leads were ever in any danger, and when the movie does its inevitable 'turn' so Patel and Apte "fall in love," it doesn't feel natural, just a by-product of the script.  Winterbottom is not the most cozy filmmaker out there, but his best films have more intellectual heft; between this and Hotel Mumbai, I completely buy into Patel being an action star (is it the beard? the thousand-yard stare?).
