The Tax Collector

Director: David Ayer
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 0.0

In some fantasy-land vision of Los Angeles, David (Bobby Soto) and Creeper (Shia LaBeouf) - who work for David's father The Wizard (Jimmy Smits) - actually collect taxes (??) from all the dangerous gangs ... which actually works, until they meet cigar-smoking Conejo (rapper Jose Conejo Martin) who likes to dice people into bits.  I like Shia, don't get me wrong, but accepting that the Crips and Latin Kings and MS-13 are scared of him is a bit of a stretch ... and that's not even the worst thing about it: it tries too hard - and fails - to be 'macho,' the philosophizing-while-driving is right out of Pulp Fiction, and for the final, ridiculous showdown (between "a believer" and a Satanist), David is able to convince the Bloods to risk their lives to help him (you won't ever see me risking my life for the IRS).  Ayer's like an angry 15-year-old in study hall who sits in the corner and watches the most explicit videos on LiveLeak.
