Early Cronenberg possesses all of his trademarks: twisted sexuality, medical horror and a lot of subtext. Here, slug-like creatures are unleashed in an apartment complex that turns everyone into libido-driven zombies - these 'parasites' are references to STDs. Perverse, obviously, but also confrontational and forceful (not to mention an influence on Alien's chest-bursting creatures later on) - if not always successful in terms of acting (most of the performers were amateurs), it makes up for it by being so unsettling.
