Canadian spy Max (Brad Pitt) 'drops' into Casablanca to work on a mission with a member of the French Resistance, Marianne (Marion Cotillard), and kill a German ambassador - against protocol, they fall in love, get married and move back to England ... where Max is informed by British Intelligence that Marianne might be an agent for the Germans. B-movie setup - alternative title: I Married a Nazi! - given some polish by accomplished entertainer Zemeckis that chugs along until the final third, where Pitt's character risks his life for a small piece of information, the Actual Truth ... and then the romantic aspect that held the movie together fully collapses: the whole relationship was a Huge Lie and Marianne ceases to be a sympathetic figure (surely they could have come up with a more intricate explanation for her behavior). Two particular scenes that are way over-done: lovemaking during a Biblical sandstorm and Cotillard delivering a child while bombs drop all around her.
