Mr. Holmes

Director: Bill Condon
Year Released: 2015
Rating: 2.0

Great detective Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen), retired and tending to his bees, struggles to piece together an old case - involving a man named Kelmont (Patrick Kennedy) and the strange actions of his wife Ann (Hattie Morahan) - due to difficulties with his memory (dementia can even affect great minds). The whole tone is downbeat and defeated - which goes against the mood of the traditional Holmes tales, where the good detective comes out ahead - and does a mediocre job juggling time frames, slowing the movie to a near-crawl. McKellen is fine, as one might expect (he brings out the ruminative aspects of his character): even with diminished brainpower, however, he's still able to figure a few things out (it's always the wasps).
