They Came Together

Director: David Wain
Year Released: 2014
Rating: 2.0

Scattered "satire" of romantic comedies has a "couple" (Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler) tell the story of how they met and "fell in love" (and out of love, and back in love, etc.) to another couple (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) over dinner. Any Showalter-Wain collaboration assuredly has at least a few laugh-out-loud moments and this has its share (usually serious Christopher Meloni is a stand-out; he works very well in comedic settings) although the target genre is unbelievably easy to ridicule and the outré humor that categorizes their best work is pretty sparse in this one. Michael Shannon's cameo, which comes out of nowhere, is all kinds of hilarious (it helps if you've seen his previous work).
