The Legend of Rita

Director: Volker Schlöndorff
Year Released: 2000
Rating: 1.5

Young radical Rita (not to mention her rhetoric-lovin' cohorts) tries to leave her communist/terrorist/cop-killer life behind and live in "normal, working class" society, only to find that law, and public knowledge of her crimes, have never gone away. She finds herself involved with two people after her identity change: an alcoholic lesbian and a lifeguard, and neither relationship is well developed or interesting (both form rather instantaneously, and are at the service of the 'plot' to keep Rita 'on the lam'). In fact, I really didn't find much worth in the little bit of information relayed about the days of the Berlin Wall and the conflicts between the East and West (what is there I already knew). It's skillfully done, but so are a lot of other pictures.
