Pretty in Pink

Director: Howard Deutch
Year Released: 1986
Rating: 2.5

80's schmaltz has outcast Andie (Molly Ringwald) - who lives with her depressed Dad (Harry Dean Stanton) in a lower-class part of town - fall for upper-class Blane (Andrew McCarthy), except his clique of rich kids don't think she's good enough for him - meanwhile, annoying Duckie (Jon Cryer) is in the Permanent Friend Zone with Andie. The examination of class issues is ever-so-slight (Spader and company are posh; Ringwald hangs out in 'rock' clubs) and the look and sounds of this are tacky and dated (those hideous colors! Duckie's wardrobe! the Psychedelic Furs! that ... hair!) but if you can look beyond surface issues there are some positives to John Hughes' script, namely an intriguing father-daughter relationship between Ringwald and Stanton as well as good supporting roles by Annie Potts and especially Spader, doing elitist sleaze with the greatest of ease.
