A man with some profound anger issues (Peter Mullan) befriends a similarly damaged soul, a shopkeeper (Olivia Colman) with a terrifyingly abusive husband (Eddie Marsan). As with Gary Oldman's directorial debut, 1997's Nil by Mouth (and even Tim Roth's The War Zone), this is an uncomfortably grim, sometimes startling film about depression and torment in a neighborhood setting - a little too much so, I fear, as the number of Cringe Moments is high and the 'redemption' so desperately sought after by Mullan and Colman's characters is pretty slight (Mullan never really comes to peace with his rage; Colman gets shipped off to jail). It's not a feel-good movie, but director Considine (an impressive performer in his own right) knows how to handle actors.
