50/50

Director: Jonathan Levine
Year Released: 2011
Rating: 2.0

An audio editor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is shocked when he discovers he has back cancer and a slim chance of surviving, so he makes the most of it with his buddy (Seth Rogan) while taking stock of his life. It never really escapes its inherently dreary and morbid set-up no matter what Rogan's character has to say or do (he's the picture's sole point of humor), and the picture is basically an emotional drag - Gordon-Levitt handles it all with dignity and class, but the weight of the material pushes the movie far down into the earth. Anna Kendrick's bubbly counselor is completely endearing: may we all be blessed with women this thoughtful and kind (she's the opposite of Bryce Dallas Howard's cheating trash).
