The Trip

Director: Michael Winterbottom
Year Released: 2010
Rating: 2.0

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon (as "themselves") go on a road trip throughout the UK to try out the best restaurants (on The Observer's dime) and proceed to aggravate each other (and me) with their endless imitations of the same three people. Originally a TV series, this spliced-together ode to aging performers doesn't really have much of an emotional edge (despite Coogan's harried phone calls to Margo Stilley's character), and the Level of Glibness is almost as high as our main character's cholesterol. Concludes on the sentiment that Brydon's "better off" because he has a stable home life, avoids drugs and dalliances with random women and is content with his place as an entertainer, but it's really the mad Coogans of the world that make the best art (but may be the most lonely). Loneliness can be conquered. Buy a dog.
