The Music Room

Director: Satyajit Ray
Year Released: 1958
Rating: 2.0

A pompous, wasteful landlord (Chhabi Biswas) spends and spends and spends all of his money entertaining locals by hiring the best musicians in all the land to perform in his music room (while smoking ungodly amounts of hookah), only to discover wasting money on frivolous things (when income is drying up by the day) isn't that great an idea. Sorry, I just don't see the (apparent) complexity in this so many others do - it doesn't help that the landlord's demeanor is off-putting and he seems prime for his comeuppance (his suicide is just the cherry on top). As for the moral of not pissing riches away on entertainment: I'm not the target audience for that (only work when you need the cash, says both I and Britpop band Franz Ferdinand).
