Bad soap opera/redemption picture has shamed warrior Magobei (Tatsuya Nakadai) tossing the bottle aside, shaking his masterless blues away and fighting back against his old peers, whose evilness he can no longer tolerate. Maybe it's just me but it doesn't really seem to make a whole lot of sense, and the editing and heavy emphasis on 'artsiness' are a distraction: the scenery can be lovely, but the filmmaking is a jumble. The swordfights are decent, but the rest of this isn't qualified to clean Kurosawa's sunglasses.
